Pilot Point Church of the Nazarene continues ministry after 111 year by Daniel Sperry for NCN News
Pilot Point, Texas

In 2016, Pilot Point Church of the Nazarene, the site where the Church of the Nazarene was founded, was on the verge of closure.
Three years later, the newly named Grace Point Church of the Nazarene has forged a strong relationship with the community of Pilot Point, and in turn, it’s brought many new believers to the Lord.
The Church of the Nazarene was founded at Pilot Point on 13 October 1908. At the time, the Pilot Point church owned about 90 acres of property. In addition to a church, the grounds were home to a college and the temporary headquarters for the denomination, along with an unwed mothers home. In 2016, the church was down to only three acres with a small building on the property.
As the property shrunk, so did the church’s footing in the community. Pastor Dwayne Edwards fell in love with the history of the congregation and wanted to regain a sense of the history as well as the footprint of the church in Pilot Point. To do so, Edwards took an unconventional approach when he arrived in the community.
“The first thing that I did when I drove into town was join the Chamber of Commerce,” Edwards said. “I learned a long time ago that the business community does not trust the church. And so, until they trust the church, you're not really in.”
Edwards said the church did whatever they could to gain a footing in the community, forging connections everywhere possible. Edwards also is a chaplain with the Pilot Point Fire Department.
“We wanted to reestablish our goal, vision, and mission and build a strong foundation,” Edwards said. “[We want to] be an outreach church, a church that really impacts the community and gets off the property.”
They’ve done everything from a Christmas Eve service in the old historic square to car shows and father’s day celebrations in an attempt to reach the community and bring people back to the church.
Edwards, an experienced church planter from California, treated Pilot Point like a new work.
The congregation had dwindled down to a handful of members in 2016, so Edwards closed the church for four months of remodeling, opening back up in June 2016.
Now, the church is over 50 members strong, and most of them are brand new Christians.
“There’s some things that we did to reach over and grab people,” Edwards said. “Paul said, ‘By all means, save some.’ I take that literally. That has been my philosophy in my life ever since I’ve been a Christian. So, you know, we do whatever we can. Wherever there’s an open door, we walked through it and then where there’s not, we break it down if we can, because people are hungry for God, they’re lost without God. So, we knock on every door.”

Nearly 500 students and 200 adults attended the second children's congress held in the El Salvador Central District. The theme was “My little heart delivered to Christ.”
The congress was held with the purpose of sharing God's word with children, discovering talents, and conducting baptisms. More than 30 youth were baptized after they previously received discipleship for three months, and an roughly 150 children accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
Those present heard God’s Word through two teachings of 15 minutes each. The children paraded with a banner they created with the date of the birth of their church and its founder. They then participated in a talent show.
“As a district superintendent, I thank our Lord Jesus Christ for supporting such a beautiful activity,” said District Superintendent Julián Cruz Ruiz. “I thank the pastors and the presidents of SDMI for working hard to disciple the children who were baptized since June. May honor and glory be for our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica

Eurasia announces new regional NMI coordinators

The Church of the Nazarene Eurasia Region announced Danilo and Emily Aguilar as the new regional Nazarene Missions International coordinators this summer. The two have served as pastors in Portugal for the last five years.
In conjunction with their appointment as the NMI coordinators for the Eurasia Region, they will also be moving to Spain to pastor the Pelicano Church of the Nazarene in Madrid.
“We are excited to join this vibrant church in the heart of the city and follow the Lord towards new horizons for spreading the Gospel,” the Aguilars said.
The Aguilars recently sat down with staff from the Eurasia Region’s monthly newsletter, “Where Worlds Meet,” for a Q&A.
WWM: Why did you agree to take on coordination of this ministry in Eurasia?
Aguilars: Our region is vast and complex, so to be trusted with such an important ministry inspires us. We’re honored. With our team of field NMI leaders, we hope to understand the challenges experienced at the district and local NMI level and create fruitful ways to participate in God’s global mission in the local context.
WWM: Do you have prior experience in this ministry, say, at the local or district level at some point in your journey?
Aguilars: We both grew up in the Church of the Nazarene and have participated in local NMI events, education, and projects. However, [we have] not [served] in leadership roles.
WWM: As missionaries, what has this ministry meant to you? Do you have any positive personal stories of how it has supported or impacted you and your work?
Aguilars: [This ministry] connects us to our global church family. We have received letters and emails with prayers and greetings from local [ministry] presidents at just the right moment. Occasionally, a gift box arrives from our Links district to cheer up our daughters. On deputation, [these ministry leaders] and their churches have received us with open arms, and we’ve shared and learned from each other during these visits. Ultimately, we appreciate global Nazarene Missions International every day, as the homes we’ve lived in were provided through Alabaster offerings given by local churches around the world. [This ministry] has encouraged us as missionaries.
WWM: What do you believe is the ministry’s role or purpose/responsibility in Eurasia?
Aguilars: To incorporate Eurasia into the Church of the Nazarene’s global mission to go where the church is not yet using practical training, equipping, and recruiting to be an actively sending and supporting church.
WWM: What will you focus on as leaders of this ministry in Eurasia?
Aguilars: With the Lord’s guidance, we hope to set a vision and goals for [this ministry in] Eurasia that will measurably inspire our Eurasian districts and local churches to be fruitful in global missions. We will serve our field NMI leaders to be equipped and empowered to serve districts and local churches as we reach these goals together.

Kansas church offers new self-care groups by Whitney Carter for Dodge City Daily Globe

Dodge City, Kansas

They say half the battle of success is showing up to the meeting.
September marked the start of four new care groups at the Dodge City Church of the Nazarene, designed to serve people who need their spirits lifted.
Addicts and alcoholics in recovery, depression and anxiety sufferers, people living with grief, and those enduring a divorce or separation from their spouse are the targeted audiences, but Director of Recovery Ministries Kat Juel said anyone is invited to attend the weekly meetings.
“A lot of people think they shouldn’t be depressed or have anxiety and just because they are Christians that if they come to church that God will make it go away, but that’s not necessarily the case,” Juel said. “We need to support and help each other and end that stigma. People need to know they are not alone.”
Juel said she was asked to design the recovery care group because of her experience overcoming drug addiction nearly five years ago. The church had enough faith in her ability that its leaders awarded her a local minister’s license this July. It was then, too, that she accepted their invitation to direct the recovery ministry.
She said her former perspective helped her better form the program for those people the church wants it to reach.
“I thought about the God I needed then, rather than the God I know now,” she said. “We want to meet you where you are spiritually.”
She described the group as “a recovery-based Bible study” that differs from 12-step programs in that it has no steps so “you can pick up anywhere.”
“It is just a place to learn about a God that is madly in love with you and develop a relationship with him,” she said.
Juel leads The Healing Hope care group for people in recovery at 6:30 p.m. every Monday.
The Divorce care group meets at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday. It includes 13 weekly sessions and a $15 workbook.
“You will learn how to heal from the deep hurt of divorce and discover hope for your future,” according to the church’s website. It is led by Bruce Giessel and Tammie West.
The Hope Share care group for people dealing with depression and anxiety meets at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday and is led by Kandi Conant and Howard Spencer.
The Grief Share care group meets at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday and provides “a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences,” according to the website. “You don’t have to go through the grieving process alone.” It is led by Geni Stanley and pastor Mark West. It, too, includes 13 weekly sessions and a $15 workbook.
Juel said attendees of the Grief Share and Divorce care groups can start anytime during the 13 sessions. Republished with permission from Dodge City Daily Globe

Offering of Thanks helps make disciples of all nations

Followers of Christ are all called to be ambassadors of the Kingdom throughout the world. As the global Church of the Nazarene, you are doing exactly that. Not only are you showing Christ’s love to your neighbors locally, but you are also showing it to those thousands of miles away.
Pyari* was hungry to know more about God after a local pastor in India shared about Jesus. She began attending Sunday worship services and prayer meetings, eventually accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and being baptized. At the time, Pyari didn’t know how to read or write, but she saved some money and purchased a Bible so she could share with others.
She would sit under a tree near the road where students would walk to school. While seated there, she would call out to one of the students asking for help. “Would you kindly read this aloud for me, please?” Pyari would ask. “I will give you two rupees.”
The student read the Bible to her while several other students gathered around to listen to what was being read. Through this strategy, the gospel was shared with her entire village. Pyari still attends every prayer meeting all over the district. If a preacher asks someone to read a passage from the Scripture, she takes the lead to read aloud. “I am so very blessed and encouraged by the life of Pyari,” said her local district superintendent
Every time you pray for the church, give to Nazarene Missions, or go on a missions trip, you share Christ’s love and help transform lives.
Resources are now available for the upcoming Offering of Thanks for Nazarene Missions.
The offering website, nazarene.org/generosity, includes promotional materials such as social media graphics, videos, posters, brochures, a PowerPoint graphic, and bulletin inserts to support local churches.

Flags of the Nations: Benin
Español

The national flag of Benin consists of two horizontal yellow and red bands on the fly side and a green vertical band at the hoist. The yellow and green allude to the northern savannas and palm groves located in the south of the country, while the red symbolizes the blood shed by those who fought for Dahomey. The yellow, green, and red are also the Pan-African colors.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Benin
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Benin in 1998.
Benin had a population of 11,340,504 in 2018. That same year, Benin reported 1,253 Churches of the Nazarene, 892 of which had been officially organized. Benin has 60,760 total members.
Located on the Africa Region, Benin has three Phase 2 districts. For more information about the Africa Region, visit africanazarene.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.

NTC–Manchester celebrates 75th anniversary, honors Kent Brower
Manchester, England

Nazarene Theological College–Manchester celebrated its 75th anniversary at this year’s graduation ceremony.
“The possibility and joy of seeing over 50 students graduate, including five with PhD degrees, must have been outside of the imagination of the college’s 1944 wartime founders,” said Principal Deirdre Brower Latz.
General Superintendent Carla Sunberg, an NTC–Manchester alumnus, was the guest speaker.
“The entire experience enhanced my life – not only professionally, but also personally and spiritually,” she said. “The opportunity to do theological research at an institution with a Wesleyan heritage in the land of Wesley was invaluable.”
The ceremony also honoured Kent Brower, who stepped down from the role of vice principal this year. Brower served as academic dean in the pivotal years when the college established its partnership with the University of Manchester and continues to serve as director of research at NTC–Manchester.
He has also served as chair of the International Board of Education and as pro-vice chancellor at Southern Africa Nazarene University. Brower has been part of the NTC faculty for over 45 years, first arriving on campus in the early 70s when he combined teaching with his own doctoral research under the supervision of F. F. Bruce.
The 52 graduates this year represent 13 different nationalities and add to the growing influence of NTC–Manchester around the world. This year’s doctoral graduates include a faculty member at MidAmerica Nazarene University, the academic dean of Cliff College, UK, and the lecturer in theology at the Scottish Baptist College, alongside pastors and leaders from around the world.
The ceremony took place in the University of Manchester’s Whitworth Hall, underlining the significant partnership that NTC–Manchester has with this university.

October is clergy appreciation month. Churches worldwide will show their appreciation for clergy and pastoral staff members through a gift, a note of encouragement, or other method.
Here are some ideas to show your pastors and clergy members your appreciation:
  • Organize a prayer calendar, so each pastor is prayed for every day of the month.
  • Create a slideshow presentation of pastors and clergy in action during the past year. Set it to music and play as a pre-service video.
  • Find volunteers to call or text members of your pastoral staff and clergy members in your congregation a message of encouragement and gratitude for how he or she has impacted your life and your community.
  • Invite them over for a home cooked meal.
  • Send your pastor to a conference or a retreat.
  • Throw them a “gift card” shower.
  • Give clergy families a night out to a local restaurant or gift certificate for an overnight get-away.
  • Invite children to make artwork for clergy in their church.
  • Allow members of the congregation to volunteer time serving pastoral leaders by babysitting or helping with yard projects and other home maintenance.
  • Update their office with new paint, décor, or even a technology upgrade.
On behalf of the Church of the Nazarene’s Global Ministry Center, thank you to pastors and all clergy for their labor and leadership in helping to make Christlike disciples in the nations.
