Hello! We completed a busy summer of District and denominational events and I am excited about the Fall with the ministry opportunities it brings. Your partnership and focused efforts are appreciated as we begin this new season.
Included in this update are introductions to some new people, new ministries and other relevant information across the District.
Welcome!
New Pastor- Rev. John Menkveld was elected with a near unanimous vote as Lead Pastor at Florence Mosaic Church. He, Kristin and the girls will begin their ministry October 6. Let's welcome John back home as he served previously at Flagstaff Church while attending Northern Arizona University (he also grew up in Arizona).
Rev. John Mendveld
New Church- I officially organized Tabernacle of Grace Church as a fully self-sufficient Nazarene church. While the group has been together for seven years as a ministry of Tempe Church, we celebrate and congratulate Pastor Riccardo Rodney (Sandy) and this wonderful group of people on achieving this goal!

Pastor Riccardo Rodney
New Sudanese Ministry Coordinator- As previously announced, I worked out an agreement with Dr. David Downs and the West Texas District to partner with them for 12 months and share Pastor Michael Gatkek so he can serve as our Sudanese Ministry Coordinator. We are up and running with this new ethnic ministry. Michael was here this past week continuing to minister and develop relationships.
New Church Planters- Rev. Cody and Amy Abrahamson will be planting a church in the West Valley with a projected launch in August 2020. They are actively involved at Turning Leaf with Lead Pastor Jeff Fillis. Cody and Amy were recently recommended at the District Church Planting Assessment Center and approved by the District Advisory Board.
New Advisory Board Member- Pastor Curt Gentry (Jan) was elected to complete the term (2021) of Rev. Kevin McGinnis on the District Advisory Board. Curt is Lead Pastor at Renovation Church and previously served on the board. Welcome back to this key District leadership position!
Pastors' and Associates' Retreat
I am looking forward to gathering October 24-26 at Pinerock. Here are some personal words from our retreat speaker, Dr. Jeren Rowell, President of Nazarene Theological Seminary:
There are a limited number of partial scholarships for those who need financial assistance.
Shared Responsibility
From District Church Planting Coordinator, Rev. Jeff Fillis (Rhonda):
Rev. Jeff Fillis
Lead Pastor Glendale Turning Leaf
District Church Planting Coordinator
"Living in one of the fastest growing areas in the United States comes with benefits, but it also comes with responsibility. One of those responsibilities is for churches and denominations to identify fast growing areas and strategically plant churches. But it all starts with a heart for those that don't know Jesus yet. There is nothing more gratifying than leading someone to Jesus and discipling them as they in turn begin to disciple people around them.
Your Arizona District is striving to be proactive in this area. We are offering a path for individuals, small groups and churches to prepare and plant churches. The first step in this path is to engage our churches in God's call to reproduce ourselves as Jesus followers.
On Friday evening, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th, we are offering a training session led by Rev. Mark Bane called Evangelism Multiplication Training at Chandler First Church. We invite pastors, staff and laity from all of our churches to attend. The cost is $25.00 per person. Meals and all training material are included. You can register by clicking on the link below or by contacting Brenda Caudle at brendacaudle@arizonadistrict.org. Begin now to talk to your leaders and invite them to attend this event with you."
Ministers In Transition
I appointed Rev. Phil Corbin (Esther) to serve as Interim Pastor at Kingman Church upon the resignation of Pastor Rob Myers. A special thank you goes to Rob and Lynn for their investment in the church and District!

Pastors' and Associates' Retreat
I am looking forward to gathering October 24-26 at Pinerock. Here are some personal words from our retreat speaker, Dr. Jeren Rowell, President of Nazarene Theological Seminary:
Having served as a local church pastor for 25 years, and a district superintendent for 12 years, I have a passion for and deep commitment to the life and work of parish ministry. The church at its best lives and serves together under the lordship of Jesus in ways that the congregation's life becomes a living and observable paradigm of the reign of God in Christ Jesus.
This passion led me toward the Seminary as a pastor, superintendent, instructor, professor, and now as president because I believe that what we do in helping to shape ministers of the gospel for the church should impact positively what happens in local churches all over the world every week.
My great joy is time spent with my wife, four children and their spouses, and six grandchildren. I love baseball (Chicago Cubs), music (especially big band jazz), and ice cream.
Pastor Todd Johnson (Tawnya) is leading worship and Rev. Ira Brown (Paula) is facilitating activities. Plus childcare will be provided. The following is a breakdown of the cost:- Adult-Double Occupancy Dorm/Martin $295
- Adult-Single Occupancy Dorm/Martin $170
- Child Dorm/Martin $110 (per child)
- Adult-Double Occupancy Deluxe Cabin/Fiesta $335
- Adult-Single Occupancy Deluxe Cabin/Fiesta $200
- Child Deluxe Cabin/Fiesta $110 (per child)
- Adult-Couple Meals Only $160
- Adult-Single Meals Only $100
- Child Meals Only $65 (per child)
There are a limited number of partial scholarships for those who need financial assistance.
