The Board of General Superintendents elected Gilmore at their September meeting.
“The Board of General Superintendents is confident that Kevin will provide great leadership in this vital ministry of the church,” said Fili Chambo, chair of the Board of General Superintendents. “Kevin’s training, experience, and heart for God and His people qualify him for the role. We are thankful for the careful and prayerful search of the Pensions & Benefits board that discovered God had someone prepared, even before we had a need.”
Gilmore follows former Pensions & Benefits USA Director Don Walter, who passed away suddenly in March after serving the organization in that capacity for nearly 25 years, with a total of 35 years of service.
"It’s an honor to serve our denomination as director of Pensions & Benefits,” Gilmore said. “I look forward to continuing the legacy of effective assistance provided by the P&B team in meeting the needs and honoring the dedicated service of our active and retired ministers, missionaries, and ministry staff."
Each year, P&B serves more than 17,000 church employees and spouses with financial support, such as retirement benefits and life and disability insurance.
Gilmore, a Certified Public Accountant for over 30 years, has extensive experience in the financial sector, and served as the chief financial officer for MidAmerica Nazarene University from 2009 to 2016. Most recently, he has been a partner with B2B CFO, a national management consulting firm that serves owners of small and mid-sized businesses.
“Kevin is both an experienced business man and a dedicated churchman,” said General Treasurer Keith Cox. “As a member of MidAmerica Nazarene University’s Board of Trustees, I observed first-hand how the Lord used Kevin to guide the university through significant financial challenges when he served as vice president of finance. I’m excited to see the Lord use Kevin’s financial expertise and passion for serving our pastoral community to further the Kingdom.”
Gilmore has also served as chairman of the Olathe Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, president of the Olathe School Board, and president of the Kansas State Board of Education. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in organizational administration/leadership from MidAmerica Nazarene University.
Kevin and his wife, Julie, have been active members of College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe, Kansas, since 1983, where Kevin leads an adult Bible study fellowship class and serves on the church board.
“My personal relationship with Jesus Christ is what defines my life,” Gilmore said. “My goal in life is to be certain I see people the way God sees them, and live a life of holiness.”
South Africa PALCON inspires church leaders

“It was a conference in season,” said District Superintendent Randal Julie. “A much-needed reality check to get our minds and hearts transformed and to once again see the true purpose of Church.”
The conference was led by Dawie de Koker, lead pastor at Agape Church of the Nazarene.
“Rev. Dawie de Koker inspired, challenged, and equipped us to step out of our comfort zone and start being effective for the Lord,” Julie said. “His openness and willingness to share his personal experiences was truly refreshing. The excitement and fire that I’m seeing and hearing from the pastors and leaders will see our churches move to greater heights and in turn allow us to become the Church that Christ intended us to be.”
According to one pastor, the tips on how to impact your community resonated strongly.
“I needed this conference,” said Pastor Clarke from Calvary Church of the Nazarene. "It was inspiring, challenging and the trusted ‘tips & tricks’ of impacting your community for God, really resonated deep within my heart.”
Many churches started implementing what they’ve learned from the Ratwerk Conference, and a delegation from the district will be driving 1,200km (~745 miles) to Rustenburg in October to attend another conference that will be hosted at the Agapé Church.
“My theory was challenged as to how important it is for us as the church to make sure that we are aware of what is REALLY needed to reach the people in our communities,” Pastor Christo said. “Holiness is a way of life, and our communities should earnestly want to seek the face of God through the difference we as a church make in their lives.” (Church of the Nazarene Africa Region)
Horse ministry provides hope to children, communities in eastern Illinois
When God prompted Stan and Mary Remole to hang on to their horses, they didn’t quite see the vision of what was to come for them and their facilities. Now, their budding ministry has helped many in eastern Illinois, and their plans for growth are expanding beyond just horses. Read more

Potomac, Illinois
Stan and Mary Remole started Hooves of Hope, a Nazarene Compassionate Ministry Center in Potomac, Illinois, 10 years ago.
“We had our son Michael, and we had show-horses,” said Mary Remole. “They would go do shows, and it was a father and son bonding thing. After Michael went to college, Stan was out at the barn and was praying and asking the Lord, ‘What should I do with the horses?’ And the Lord spoke to him and said, ‘I want you to keep them, and we are going to use them.’ I never realized it would have been to this extent.”
It began as just bringing some kids from the local church down to the farm. But from there, it blossomed to a much larger scale than they were imagining.
“Now we’re having church in the barn here,” Remole said.
Their facility is specifically used as a way to help troubled youth in their community and the surrounding communities as well. As part of their program, children sign up for courses and learn everything from feeding and cleaning stalls to leading the horses and riding them. They also have lessons on their virtue of the year (in 2019 it is courage) through Bible lessons.
The classes aren’t the only thing Hooves of Hope offers. They recently started a Saturday night church service in their barn and have mini-horses that they take to schools, nursing homes, and hospitals nearby.
Every step of the way, they say God has provided for them, especially when they wanted to add on a horse arena.
“We didn’t have dirt,” Remole said. “We purchased our family’s farm and wanted to build a horse arena, and we started praying for dirt. We’ve added on twice now and have gotten 750 semi-loads free.”
Next month, Hooves of Hope will put on a children’s rodeo to raise funds to expand. The couple hopes to build a 2,000 square foot classroom space that includes a kitchen for cooking lessons, a woodworking shop, and a space for sewing and knitting lessons, so they can offer classes in life skills to troubled kids as well.
Above all else, the Remoles want to help people in a way that leads them to Christ.

Trujillo, Peru
Topics included the pastor’s kid sponsorship program, child development centers, how to present disaster response projects, natural disaster prevention and response, and how to mobilize the local church through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries.
“This is the first time I've attended an NCM training,” said Arleny Perez Torres. “It was a great blessing to gain a deeper understanding on the holistic approach of this ministry to help people. The presenters were very clear and engaging.”
The conference focused heavily on child protection.
“For the first time, I attended an event like this,” said Ana*. “During this training, things were said without mincing words; we truly want to implement a child protection policy and develop a plan to fight the abuse and violence against them.”
The attendees were left challenged and motivated to develop an excellent ministry for the glory of God.
“I feel challenged and there's a question that confronts me,” Torres said. “Are we a compassionate church where we live? We have an example [because] God is compassionate. The church cannot serve God and ignore our neighbor.” *name of minor redacted (Church of the Nazarene South America)

The couple served as missionaries in four Portuguese-speaking nations: Cabo Verde (1946-1958), Brazil (1958-1974), Portugal (1974-1983), and the Azores (1983-1989).
"The Mostellers played a significant role in the Church of the Nazarene’s mid-twentieth century expansion," said Stan Ingersol, Nazarene archivist. "Thanks, especially, to Liz Ott, a daughter, who spent weeks filling a moving pod with boxes and footlockers."
Earl planted the first Nazarene congregation in Brazil in Campinas, a suburb of metropolitan São Paulo. Current missionary Stephen Heap notes that “the initiative (to begin work in Brazil) was scheduled for 1958 as a part of the denomination's Golden Anniversary celebration. With the visionary leadership of the Mostellers and other pioneer leaders, the Nazarenes established a dynamic base.” Earl’s roles in Brazil included pastor, district superintendent, and field director.
Sandro Hayakawa, biographer, notes that their “great pastoral experience contributed” to the success of the mission in Brazil (The Mostellers: Life and Preaching of Earl and Gladys Mosteller, 2010). Others, including national preachers, built upon the base they laid, and there were 140,089 Nazarenes in Brazil by late 2018, with Central Church in Campinas being one of the largest Nazarene congregations in the world.
Heap observes that “scholars interested in researching the factors that fostered early Nazarene growth in Brazil will find answers in Earl Mosteller's notes from the pioneer era.”
After pastoring in four world areas, they retired to Seattle, Washington, in 1989. Earl died in 2015 at age 97, and Gladys passed away the following year at age 99.
“This collection is a rich acquisition for Nazarene Archives, since Earl and Gladys Mosteller were among the best-known missionaries of their generation,” Ingersol said. “For thousands of Nazarenes, their lives represented the highest ideal of Christian service. Moreover, the size, scope, and extent of this collection will be valuable for those in the future who will study the expansion of Protestantism in South America.” (Church of the Nazarene Archives)

Flags of the Nations: Aruba
Español
The flag of Aruba consists of a red star and two yellow stripes. The red star represents the four points of the compass, with the island having drawn people from around the world. The star also represents the island itself, surrounded by the beautiful blue sea. The horizontal yellow stripes denote the free and separate position Aruba enjoys in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The blue represents the sea that surrounds Aruba; yellow is the color of abundance, representing the island's past and its industries of gold, aloe, and oil; red is for the love each Aruban has for the country and the ancient industry of Brazilwood; and white symbolizes the snow-white beaches as well as the purity of the hearts of Aruba's people who strive for justice, order and liberty.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country. This week: Aruba
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Aruba in 2000.
Aruba had a population of 116,576 in 2018. That same year, Aruba reported one Church of the Nazarene, which is officially organized. Aruba has 570 total members.
Aruba is part of the Suriname District, a Phase 1 district on the Mesoamerica Region. For more information about the Mesoamerica Region, visit mesoamericaregion.org.

The Work & Witness coordinator, Brother Greene, shared about the team's recent trip to Dominica and their plans to go to Bahamas next year.
The district's Sunday School director, Cindy Ann Collymore, led a game called Wheel of Missions (a wheel-of-fortune game) in which the contestants were local pastors: Clifton Dupigny, Kwame Payne, and Rian Williams.

The objectives of the conference included providing instructional training and ministerial updates for pastors, seminary professors, and other church members. There were approximately 89 people in attendance at the Arica location.
“Through this conference, we were able to reinforce the idea that as Christians we have a particular vision about culture,” said Patricio Huanca, education development coordinator at Chile Nazarene Bible Seminary.
The speaker for the academic conference was Magister Vinicius Couto, pastor in the Church of the Nazarene, professor at Brazil Nazarene Theological Seminary, and author of several books about Wesleyan-Arminian theology. The topics of his presentations were “Divine sovereignty and human responsibility in the context of the controversy of predestination between Arminius and Wesley” and “Contemporary ethical reflections drawn from Arminian theology.”
“Our ethical values as well as our worldview are founded in the Scriptures, and they provide a legitimate way to provide answers to the problems we have in today's society,” Huanca said. “These aspects are greatly needed as we live in the midst of a hedonist and individualist society.” (Church of the Nazarene South America Region)
