RB 1st UMC eNews: Potluck lunch. And love, even when it's messy. for Thursday, 31 January 2019 from The First United Methodist Church in Redondo Beach, California, United States

  • Go deeper in faith with love, always. (Also, Soup-Er Bowl Sunday and a Potluck lunch.)
From Pastor Molly: Love when it's messy
The Valentine's Day merchandise has been in the stores for weeks already, and my social media accounts keep showing me ads for flowers to send to loved ones. Love is in the air. And, while I'm fully supporting of finding lovely ways to show and share our love for others, I also want to lift up love in the ways and places that don't make our Instagram feed.

I give thanks, too, for the deep love that makes grief and loss so painful. I give thanks for the persistent love that makes forgiveness possible, even with all its risks. I give thanks for love that bridges divides, and overcomes stereotypes, triumphing against all odds--and I give thanks for love that seems wasted or improbable or unlikely.

On Sunday, in worship, we'll read some of the most famous scripture verses written about love, from 1 Corinthians 13. We often use them at weddings, or hang them on our walls, thinking about what they have to say for our marriages and our families. But these words were originally written not on a greeting card to give to your spouse when things are going well, but in a letter sent to a church full of people who were having trouble getting along.

God calls us to love one another, not because everything is already lovely and sweet, but in the midst of challenges and struggle. As a community of diverse people, brought together by a connection and power way bigger than ourselves. Love makes it possible to endure, and it changes our bottom line. No longer do we seek to destroy our opponents; instead, we are called to love our enemies. May it be so.

    Grace and peace,

    "Greater Gifts: Love"
    Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
    1 Corinthians 13:1-11
1 Corinthians 13:1 I may speak in the tongues of men, even angels; but if I lack love, I have become merely blaring brass or a cymbal clanging.
2 I may have the gift of prophecy, I may fathom all mysteries, know all things, have all faith - enough to move mountains; but if I lack love, I am nothing.
3 I may give away everything that I own, I may even hand over my body to be burned; but if I lack love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient and kind, not jealous, not boastful,
5 not proud, rude or selfish, not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not gloat over other people's sins but takes its delight in the truth.
7 Love always bears up, always trusts, always hopes, always endures.
8 Love never ends; but prophecies will pass, tongues will cease, knowledge will pass.
    9 For our knowledge is partial, and our prophecy partial;
10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass.
11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, thought like a child, argued like a child; now that I have become a man, I have finished with childish ways. (Complete Jewish Bible).
    1 Corinthians 13:1-11

    Verse 2

[2] And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I have the gift of prophecy — Of foretelling future events.
And understand all the mysteries — Both of God's word and providence.
And all knowledge — Of things divine and human, that ever any mortal attained to. And though I have the highest degree of miracle working faith, and have not this love, I am nothing.
    Verse 3
[3] And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
And though I — Deliberately, piece by piece. Give all my goods to feed the poor, yea, though I deliver up my body to be burned - Rather than I would renounce my religion.
And have not the love — Hereafter described.
It profiteth me nothing — Without this, whatever I speak, whatever I have, whatever I know, whatever I do, whatever I suffer, is nothing.
    Verse 4
[4] Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
The love of God, and of our neighbour for God's sake, is patient toward, all men. It, suffers all the weakness, ignorance, errors, and infirmities of the children of God; all the malice and wickedness of the children of the world: and all this, not only for a time, but to the end. And in every step toward overcoming evil with good, it is kind, soft, mild, benign. It inspires the sufferer at once with the most amiable sweetness, and the most fervent and tender affection.
Love acteth not rashly — Does not hastily condemn any one; never passes a severe sentence on a slight or sudden view of things. Nor does it ever act or behave in a violent, headstrong, or precipitate manner.
Is not puffed up — Yea, humbles the soul to the dust.
    Verse 5
    [5] Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
It doth not behave indecently — Is not rude, or willingly offensive, to any. It renders to all their due - Suitable to time, person, and all other circumstances.
Seeketh not her own — Ease, pleasure, honour, or temporal advantage. Nay, sometimes the lover of mankind seeketh not, in some sense, even his own spiritual advantage; does not think of himself, so long as a zeal for the glory of God and the souls of men swallows him up. But, though he is all on fire for these ends, yet he is not provoked to sharpness or unkindness toward any one. Outward provocations indeed will frequently occur; but he triumphs over all. Love thinketh no evil - Indeed it cannot but see and hear evil things, and know that they are so; but it does not willingly think evil of any; neither infer evil where it does not appear. It tears up, root and branch, all imagining of what we have not proof. It casts out all jealousies, all evil surmises, all readiness to believe evil.
    Verse 6
    [6] Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity — Yea, weeps at either the sin or folly of even an enemy; takes no pleasure in hearing or in repeating it, but desires it may be forgotten for ever.
But rejoiceth in the truth — Bringing forth its proper fruit, holiness of heart and life. Good in general is its glory and joy, wherever diffused in all the world.
    Verse 7
[7] Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Love covereth all things - Whatever evil the lover of mankind sees, hears, or knows of any one, he mentions it to none; it never goes out of his lips, unless where absolute duty constrains to speak.
Believeth all things — Puts the most favourable construction on everything, and is ever ready to believe whatever may tend to the advantage of any one character. And when it can no longer believe well, it hopes whatever may excuse or extenuate the fault which cannot be denied. Where it cannot even excuse, it hopes God will at length give repentance unto life.
Meantime it endureth all things — Whatever the injustice, the malice, the cruelty of men can inflict. He can not only do, but likewise suffer, all things, through Christ who strengtheneth him.
    Verse 8
[8] Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
Love never faileth — It accompanies to, and adorns us in, eternity; it prepares us for, and constitutes, heaven.
But whether there be prophecies, they shall fail — When all things are fulfilled, and God is all in all.
Whether there be tongues, they shall cease — One language shall prevail among all the inhabitants of heaven, and the low and imperfect languages of earth be forgotten. The knowledge likewise which we now so eagerly pursue, shall then vanish away - As starlight is lost in that of the midday sun, so our present knowledge in the light of eternity.
    Verse 9
[9] For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part — The wisest of men have here but short, narrow, imperfect conceptions, even of the things round about them, and much more of the deep things of God. And even the prophecies which men deliver from God are far from taking in the whole of future events, or of that wisdom and knowledge of God which is treasured up in the scripture revelation.
    Verse 10
[10] But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
But when that which is perfect is come — At death and in the last day.
That which is in part shall vanish away — Both that poor, low, imperfect, glimmering light, which is all the knowledge we now can attain to; and these slow and unsatisfactory methods of attaining, as well as of imparting it to others.
    Verse 11
[11] When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
In our present state we are mere infants in point of knowledge, compared to what we shall be hereafter.
I put away childish things — Of my own accord, willingly, without trouble. (John Wesley's Explanatory Notes).

    one love
    One love, one heart
Let's get together and feel all right
Hear the children crying (One love)
Hear the children crying (One heart)
Sayin', "Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right."
Sayin', "Let's get together and feel all right."
    Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Let them all pass all their dirty remarks (One love)
There is one question I'd really love to ask (One heart)
Is there a place for the hopeless sinner
Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?
    Believe me
    One love, one heart
Let's get together and feel all right
As it was in the beginning (One love)
So shall it be in the end (One heart)
Alright, "Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right."
"Let's get together and feel all right."
    One more thing
Let's get together to fight this Holy Armageddon (One love)
So when the Man comes there will be no, no doom (One song)
Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner
There ain't no hiding place from the Father of Creation
    Sayin', "One love, one heart
Let's get together and feel all right."
I'm pleading to mankind (One love)
    Oh, Lord (One heart) Whoa.
Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right.
Let's get together and feel all right.
Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right.
Let's get together and feel all right.

    Love rescue me
Come forth and speak to me
Raise me up and don't let me fall
    No man is my enemy
    My own hands imprison me
    Love rescue me
    Many strangers have I met
On the road to my regret
Many lost who seek to find themselves in me
    They ask me to reveal
The very thoughts they would conceal
    Love rescue me
And the sun in the sky
Makes a shadow of you and I
Stretching out as the sun sinks in the sea
    I'm here without a name
In the palace of my shame
    Said, love rescue me
In the cold mirror of a glass
    I see my reflection pass
See the dark shades of what I used to be
See the purple of her eyes
    The scarlet of my lies
    Love rescue me
    Yea, though I walk
    In the valley of shadow
Yea, I will fear no evil
I have cursed thy rod and staff
    They no longer comfort me

In the palace of my shame
    I said love rescue me

And many have expressed their sympathy after hearing about the loss of Church Administrative Assistant, Ernie Valenzuela's father recently.

On September 26, 1976, 14 year old Larry Mullen, Jr. placed a note on the bulletin board of Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, Ireland, looking for members to form a band. 6 people responded. They began as Feedback, performing covers of other artists’ music, then in 1977 changed their name to The Hype with 5 members. In March of 1978, they phased out their fifth man and changed their name to U2, playing their own original material. Their 1st big break came when they won a competition on St. Patrick’s Day, 1978, which provided them with the opportunity to record a demo that would be heard by CBS Ireland, a record label. Since then U2 has gone on to release 13 studio albums and have become one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, selling over 170 million albums worldwide. They have won 22...

They have won 22 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.  Rolling Stone ranked U2 as 22nd on their list of “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”.  Love Rescue Me was part of the album Rattle and Hum, which was released in 1988.  The album explores American root music and incorporates blues rock, folk rock and gospel elements in the music.  In November of 1987, Bono met Bob Dylan and they wrote a song together called Prisoner of Love, which later became Love Rescue Me.  The original recording was recorded with Bob Dylan singing lead vocals and was recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, which had been home to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, to name a few.  Dylan asked that his version not be included in the album because of previous commitments.

Bob Marley was a Jamaican composer/singer/recording artist who became a world-renowned cultural icon and synonymous with Jamaica and reggae music.  In fact, today Jamaica still uses his song One Love in their tourism ads.  He was born in 1945 and fused reggae, ska and rocksteady styles of music into his compositions.  He started his career with his band The Wailers in 1963, which released some of the earliest reggae recordings.  When the band disbanded in 1974, he moved to England and embarked on a solo career with the 1977 release of his mega-hit album Exodus.  It had 4 hit singles – ExodusJammingWaiting In Vain and One Love.  It went stayed on the British album charts for 56 consecutive weeks, sold 75 million records and established him as one of the best-selling recording artists of all time.  He tragically died young, at the age of 36, of melanoma in Miami in 1981.

Jesus Loves Me is perhaps one of the most well-known children’s hymns in the hymnbook.  The lyrics were written by Anna Bartlett Warner as a poem that was included in a novel, written by her older sister Susan, called Say and Seal which was published in 1860.  In the novel, it was spoken as a comforting poem to a dying child.  In 1862, William Batchelder Bradbury wrote the melody and added the chorus – “Yes, Jesus loves me, the bible tells me so”.  In the hymnbook, the tune is called “CHINA”, which was shortened, by about 1975, from “The favorite Hymn of China”.  The song has been sung and recorded by a variety of performers, including Ray Stevens, Whitney Houston (on The Bodyguardsoundtrack), Rosemary Clooney, Alabama and Destiny’s Child, and remains one of the most popular Christian hymns in the world.

I Love You Lord was written in 1974 by Laurie Klein.  She was a young mother and homemaker in Oregon and was “feeling the poverty of my life keenly at that point, both emotionally and physically.”  She sang the first part of the song spontaneously, and felt so intrigued and moved by the words that she thought “maybe I should write this down.”  She stopped long enough to get a pen and then the rest of the song came just as easily.  Her husband Bill recognized the simple beauty of the song and encouraged her to play it for a local pastor and some visiting musicians.  Eventually the song surfaced at Jack Hayford's Church on the Way in Van Nuys. There Buck and Annie Herring learned the song and included it on Annie's Kids of the Kingdom. But its greatest exposure was on Maranatha! Music's Praise 4 in 1980.  Since then, it has been estimated to have been recorded over 75 times.  A notable, rather earthy cover of the song was released by the rock band Petra in 1997 on their album Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus.
What is the role of ushers in the church?
Ushers today provide an invaluable service to the church. A church usher is a person who helps ensure a smoothly running church service and who ministers to people in a variety of practical ways. The duties here at Redondo First usually include greeting people as they arrive for the service and assisting people with special needs. They are responsible to take up the church offering and make sure it is put in the proper place. With a goal of minimizing distractions during the music and sermon, ushers stand ready to assist anyone in the congregation who might need help, to aid latecomers in finding a seat, and to inform those in the sanctuary of any urgent matters. If you would like to be a part of this vital church ministry, please contact Don Jones. Email Don Jones

    Support missions through recycling!
Bring your plastic bottles, aluminum cans AND CRV glass bottles to church every Sunday. By recycling we can support Corazon, Crop Walk, Habitat for Humanity and some of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) programs: Syrian refugee relief, eradicating hunger, clean water, ending malaria and fighting HIV/AIDS. We appreciate all recycling donations, but the blue recycling bins are only for CA RV or CRV. We don't get any funds from milk cartons, or other plastics that are not CRV.
We have many spots to fill for liturgists on Sunday mornings. The following link will take you the sign up. Please check it out.
